Melinda Nadj Abonji, Tauben fliegen auf: Melinda Nadj Abonji was born in 1968 in the Serbian Vojvodina, when she was a girl she emigrated to Switzerland with her parents. Two home places and two kinds of freedoms. These are the experiences her second novel “Falcons without Falconers” is based on. The narrator Ildikó Kocsis tells stories from the emigration and alternates them with anecdotes from the old home in the Voyvodina. The Koscis family is happy in Switzerland. In 1993 they open up their own café in their village. Getting there, however, was a long process for her parents Rosza and Miklós, demanding strength, patience and humbleness from them. The two daughters Nomi and Ildikó help in the café but they strive toward their own freedom. They no longer want to be humiliated and insulted as foreigners. With stylistic subtlety Melinda Nadj Abonji vividly, colourfully and wittily writes about these two aspects of a successful emigration and integration. The author reveals herself as a virtuoso stylist who manages to carry a narrative vividness into a musically flexible form. She does not fixate on recounting but rather brings forth a rhythmic structure that remains easy to read. «Tauben fliegen auf» was awarded the Deutscher Buchpreis 2010.

Sibylle Berg, Wunderbare Jahre: Paris, Vienna, Tel Aviv, Thailand … place we long to go and to explore, because we regard them as beautiful, romantic, exotic, perhaps even a little bit dangerous. But – are they still? Sibylle Berg's view is: «no». The days when we longed to escape are gone, she says, and the world of the 21th century has become somewhere we wish to escape from. Her pen is sharp and caustic, but also funny and discerning, as she writes how travel is not what it once was. Beaches are battlegrounds, cafés are bombing zones, cruise ships are «environmental killing fields» where «personal space is portion-controlled». These essays and columns, written over the past twenty years and revised and expanded for this book, are Berg's very personal travelogues. And she's no armchair traveller: she's been there, done that and tells us about it soberly, idealising nothing, but never without emotion. This is a highly intellectual and readable «anti-guidebook». Rut Plouda, Sco scha nüglia nu füss: In ‘Wie wenn nichts wäre’ the Lower Engadine author Rut Plouda tells the story of the short-lived Joannes, she wrote this dialogue between narrator and child in Vallader (Rhaeto-Romance). Through memories, dreams, sounds as well as through a state adrift between reality and imagination the I creates the world of the you. All experiences are expressed in surprising images: On the day of his funeral Joannes is sitting cross-legged on the top of the roof, looking over the gathering of people, laughing. In a clear and lean language this work of prose deals with life and death, interlacing narration and memory. Like, for instance, in the nine fragments that are woven into the narration, carrying titles such as The Sailor, The Hunter, or Robinson. Here the narrator describes Joannes’ wishful thinking and thereby gives him a voice. ‘Wie wenn nichts wäre’ is many things: expression of a deep love and intimacy between mother and son, an unforgettable adventure, expression of respect on the part of the author for a extraordinary human being – for the magical world of Joannes. Rut Plouda herself had a son with down syndrome. This book has been translated into French, Romanian and German. In 2001 it received the Swiss Schiller Foundation Prize.
